That egg probably holds two yolks (unfortunately, they would not be able to live to hatch into twins if you try). It is probably from an older hen, one about ready to stop having eggs. Generally eggs start out small when they are just starting to lay them, and get bigger and bigger. You will get a few double yolk ones, then they will stop laying.
One other interesting thing is that you can tell which hens are laying or not by how yellow their beaks and legs are. The more yellow, the less eggs, and time to go to the stewpot.
AND (I've blogged about it before)- NEVER name your chickens after missionaries. It is almost impossible to butcher and eat Gladys Alward. Almost as bad is using Narnia Characters... a chicken named Mr. Beaver is destined for a long life.
